Carson and Mr. Trees 1977

For those of you who are interested in finding out how things turn out with Paige and Carson after their first date, you will be pleased to know that the sequel to The Race Against Time is about 75% complete. Like the first novel, the sequel is based on actual events. The novel (which has yet to be titled) begins with “absence makes the heart grow fonder” moments that students had to endure back in 1970s because there were no cell phones or the internet. The semester break lasted three weeks—an eternity for young people. Friends separated geographically back then had to resort to expensive long distance phone calls and hand written letters that took days or weeks to arrive.

Carson and Paige 1980

As the story unfolds, Carson bravely tells Paige  he’s in love with her over the telephone on Christmas,  Little does he know Paige has a secret that she’s not about to discuss with him over the phone. Will their relationship survive when the truth comes out?

In the sequel, Carson and Mr. Trees continue to find ways to entertain themselves running around campus at all hours.  A new character, Crazy Joe, is introduced and is a bit of a John Belushi character. Madison, one of Carson’s dates in The Race Against Time, returns in the sequel and aggressively competes with Paige for Carson’s affection as graduation draws ever closer.

One of the threads in The Race Against Time involves the sale of Carson’s high-performance Dodge Demon, which leaves him without a car at the end of the semester. When Carson learns he won’t be able to collect all the money owed him from the sale, he accepts a brand new guitar as the final payment. Once he learns how to play it, he’s bitten by a song writing bug and ends up composing a song he hopes to someday play for the girl he loves. Will Paige, Madison, or some other girl he meets during his second semester at the university be the one who listens to the song? Use the link below to listen to the song Carson wrote called “Laughter and Tears.”
