An author often wonders how his or her work will stand up to scrutiny, especially after pouring their heart and soul into it. Anthionette Ejimofor, who makes a living reviewing books, recently made these comments about my novel, The Race Against Time. Her reflections made me proud to have written it. I love the fact that she highlighted the journey and personal growth of the main character, Carson. For more information regarding her services she can be reached at ejimofor.anthionette@gmail.com

 The Struggles That Mirrors Growth

The Race Against Time follows the life of Carson, a college senior in 1979, as he rebuilds his life bit by bit. Over the years, he had suffered from doubt, recklessness, and failure. Now determined to find a new path, he joins the cross-country team, where the sport becomes a source of discipline in his journey of endurance, faith, and self-discovery.

Carson slowly grows under the guidance of his coach and support from his teammates. Alongside his athletic growth, Carson opens up his heart to love. His relationship faces misunderstanding and interference from others. As the chapters unfold, Carson learns to respond to situations and makes symbolic sacrifices to achieve his milestones. For more information, read The Race Against Time by William Roushey, Jr.

What struck me first about this book is how vivid every description felt. The story takes us back to 1979, and life on the campus felt real to me, like I’ve somehow teleported to the 1970s. I was able to envision the simpler time without the noise of modern distractions, and that really allowed me to focus on Carson’s journey.

Now, the plot itself is really balanced and progressive. The first half pulls you in with Carson’s struggles. He was already a senior who had messed up a lot in life, yet he dared to start over. I got to experience Carson as he stumbled, got teased, and almost fell apart. It was beautiful to read how he slowly built up his grit. The second half shifts gear. It’s no longer just about running but about testing his character. There was the PCAC race, the disappointment, and then the redemption.

In all of this, I loved how the races mirror his personal struggles with Paige also. It was clear that endurance in running and endurance in relationships require the same patience, honesty, and faith, as you’d see in Carson’s story.

Moreover, the author writes in a way that’s both simple and sincere. I wouldn’t say this book has flashy prose, but it gets under your skin because it’s honest. Adopting such a writing style made me feel the burn in Carson’s legs while he raced.

The dialogues, especially with Paige, were tender and awkward in just the right way. While reading through this book, I slowly got to understand the aim of the book. It isn’t just to tell a love story or a sports story; it’s really about showing how a person can be transformed by discipline, faith, and the willingness to let go of the past.

Furthermore, the themes in this book run deep. Perseverance, humility, friendship, and faith all stand out. What I personally took away from this entire story, honestly, is that growth is a process. Carson doesn’t wake up one day as a winner; there was a fight. He fights for it step by step. It reminded me how victories are sweeter when they’re earned through struggle and integrity.

In addition, I did enjoy reading every bit of this book. The Race Against Time is just the beginning of Carson’s story, and we’ve seen him grow so much. I actually wondered what a sequel would look like. Would he and Paige survive the challenges of adult life? How would his faith hold up outside the safety of campus, or what career path would he even take? There’s a lot of room for the author to explore the next stage of Carson’s journey, and I’m here for it.

Finally, this book was professionally edited, as I found no noticeable errors while reading. Therefore, I rate The Race Against Time 5 out of 5 stars. I recommend this book to young adults, especially those who are passionate about self-growth. It’s also a good pick for anyone who enjoys campus novels.
